100 Years Of Gothic Hairstyles

Goth hair can be a phase and also a lifestyle. It’s funny though, it has always been in styled in black however it was never styled the same during the years. Today we will start from the 1920’s to show you a Gothic styles back then, and we can compare the differences to now a days.

1920’s

In these times a film star by the name of Theda Bara had a Gothic look, however in those days people referred to the style by The Vamp look. Theda used to wear black Eye shadow around her eyes, very close to a panda eye and dark black lips. Her hair used to look messy and styled down with a black hair band worn on her forehead.

1930’s

Do you know about the movie The Bride Of Frankenstein? I’m sure you heard of it. Well that movie had inspired the look of the goth to this very day. It is the classic vamp look. Our Personal favorite of the ancient history here. This look included a high hold hair look with a white wavy streak on the side. Some plain simple eyeliner and dark red lips combined with black lip liner.

Women used to style their hair back leaving some curls on the front too. They included dark red or dark pink lipstick and the new Gothic thing that got highly marketed was the henna eye liner women from the middle east were styling with. This was a cool Vamp trend to that day, however it is worn often and done usually on a normal fashionable trend to this day.

1940’s

Seductive women from the movie Noir styled with full brows and what was then called the hunter bow lips. The hunter bow lips is a look where the one draws over the upper lip, then one applies the lipstick. The lipstick then gets spread all over the cupid bow. This was commonly done with a red lipstick.

1950’s

The year of the pink ups were the hair was styled all in up styles. Not one hair hanging out. The Gothic twist of this era was the winged eyeliner. Where being edgy was when you wore winged eyeliner. This look have been stuck to women to this very day. In fact the winged eyeliner has grew. Some also style with double the wing these days. It is what we call a fish eyeliner. Pin up stars like Jami Deadly used to make the whole world jealous by their look, and the winged eyeliner trend only enhanced their beauty more.

1960’s

The Gothic look had a twist and bit of new changes in the 60’s with the television series The Family Addams In this show actress, Carolyn Jones played the role of Motricia Addams. She had quite of a look which gave the world of goth another awakening. They wore heavy make up and red lips, very long black plain straight hair.

1970’s

The famous band of Kiss. A rock band which plent of teenagers were interested in. Some are still interested to this very day as it was a very good band. The band wears heavy make up. Dark shaped eyeliner and eye shadow around their eyes, white faces. Including also dark lips. The hair is done slightly to a side. But it is stiff as can be. Styled back with a bit of messy look and a lot of hair spray and back combing is done. The kids did not dress the exactly the same, however punks used to have a few shapes around the eyes and dark red/black lips. Teens also started to include facial piercings at this era.
